Frequently Asked Questions on Labiaplasty
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty (sometimes also referred to as Vaginal Rejuvenation) involves giving a youthful appearance by removing excess / sagging skin of the labia minora. Labia Minora refers to the ‘inner lips’ of the vagina that are close to the clitoris. This procedure may also be combined with cosmetic procedure involving the reshaping of labia majora (the ‘outer lips’ of the vagina).

Why is labiaplasty done at all?
Two reasons:
- when a woman’s vagina is not symmetrical
- when the woman wants the youthful look of the vagina back
Some women are born with unsymmetrical labia majora or labia minora. In some women, the labia minora (‘the inner lips’) are bigger than the labia majora (‘the outer lips). In order the correct the deformities and make them symmetrical, women undergo labiaplasty.
Other major reason is the look/appearance of the vagina. With age and with vaginal births, the muscles around the vagina also lose strength and become lose. The vaginal lips look sagging and some may not like that as it might be denting their confidence in bed. Such women also prefer to undergo the cosmetic labiaplasty procedure to regain the youthful appearance of their vagina and also their self confidence.
Is labiaplasty a medical procedure that is necessary?
- “Labiaplasty is a cosmetic gynecology procedure that doesn’t really add any functional value to the vagina or any parts of the vulva” says Dr. Deepa Ganesh from DG Laser & Cosmetic Gynecology Clinic in Kilpauk, Chennai.
Dr. Deepa Ganesh, a pioneer in cosmetic gynecology in India adds that women who also want to look better in their bikini also prefer to undergo labiaplasty procedure. As the lips of the vagina become stretched / sagged or get longer, it may happen that they tend to go inside the vagina during sex. That’s another scenario when women get the procedure done.
Do women really undergo labiaplasty in Chennai, India?
Yes. A handful of women undergo labiaplasty every month in Chennai, India alone. Many are not aware of the procedure yet and as women are becoming aware of the cosmetic gynecology procedures, they are willing to undergo the knife for various personal reasons.
“When someone wants labiaplasty done, I do tell them that this procedure doesn’t really add/subtract anything to their sensual pleasures but can only change the physical appearance of their vagina”, says Dr. Deepa Ganesh. “Only after their formal consent, the procedure is performed.”
Who should NOT get the labiaplasty done?
Doctor being a human can assure of a near symmetrical shape to the lips of the vagina. If a woman is very particular and precise to the very millimeter, she is surely not a good candidate for labiaplasty.
A woman who is planning to give birth to children in future is also not a good candidate for labiaplasty because, as said, due to the loosening of muscles near the vagina due to child birth, the lips of the vagina may get out of shape eventually nullifying the procedure.
“Women who are diabetic and are not in good health also should not undergo the procedure” says Dr. Deepa Ganesh.
What are the risks associated with labiaplasty surgery?
As with any surgery, labiaplasty surgery has got it’s own risks:
- The sensitivity of the vulvar region may reduce
- Vagina may become dry and numb
- Scarring during the procedure can result in painful sex. (Typically, with an experienced gynecologist, this may not happen but there is a remote possibility).
Also, removing excess skin from the labia minora, the chances of vaginal infections may go up. Labia minora typically covers the opening of the vagina and also helps vagina manage the pH balance of the fluids inside it. If the pH balance gets disturbed, that can result in growth of unwanted bad bacteria and microbes from external environment will also be able to enter and grow inside the vagina resulting in infection and discharge.
