Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation - Is it only a cosmetic procedure?
Laser vaginal rejuvenation ® or Vaginal Rejuvenation is a procedure which can restore the youthful look of your vagina just like when you were in your 16s. Vaginal rejuvenation can be considered an umbrella term that involves multiple procedures in it including, working on the outer part of the vagina called “Labia Majora”, the inner ‘lips’ of the vagina called ‘Labia Minora’, hymenoplasty that reduces the circumference of the vaginal entrance, hoodoplasty etc.
While this is very good news for some, especially for those elite women and celebrities, there is another great news about why you should get vaginal rejuvenation done – to fix your prolapse and incontinence problems. Let’s look at the list of other benefits that you will be seeing after undergoing the laser vaginal rejuvenation procedure:
- Reduction in symptoms of bladder prolapse (cystocele) and rectocele (rectal prolapse).
- Repairing the muscles in the perineal region
- Incontinence issues.
Reduction in symptoms of bladder and rectal prolapse
Prolapse refers to the medical condition when the soft organs in the pelvic region fall off from their place owing to weaker muscles that are holding them. The weakness in the pelvic muscles can be due to:
- Aging
- Getting pregnant and vaginal delivery
- Trauma or injury to the abdominal region
- A surgery that affected the muscles in the pelvic region.
While trauma or injury and a surgery that’s gone wrong are not something that a woman undergoes often but aging and childbirth are the most contributing factors for weakening and tearing up pelvic muscles. There is tremendous pressure on the pelvic muscles during pregnancy and during delivery there are several muscles and tissues that are torn by the time the baby is delivered. Interesting part is, these muscles are never getting back to their previous strength after healing unless you really take care of your pelvic region and work on it everyday for a considerable amount of time.
As the muscles lose their grip on the soft organs such as bladder, uterus, rectum etc, they start falling down due to gravity resulting in respective prolapse. A bladder prolapse will look like something that is protruding through the lower abdomen that can make life difficult when peeing, sitting etc. More information about bladder prolapse or cystocele can be read by visiting “Bladder prolapse (Cystocele)” article by Dr. Deepa Ganesh, Chennai’s leading gynaecologist and robotic surgeon.
Similarly a dropped rectum can push the posterior wall of the vagina that can make sex a little painful and in worst cases, it can be seen through the anus. You may be constipated and may have pain at the time of passing stools. Learn more on ‘Rectocele or Rectal prolapse’ by clicking the link.

Repairing the muscles in perineal region
Perineum is the area between the vagina and the anus. During delivery, as the muscles in the abdomen region stretch to allow the delivery of the baby, the muscles in the perineum feel the pressure and tear up. In cases when the baby’s head is large and doesn’t fit through the already stretched vaginal opening, doctors may cut the perineum open to make the passage larger. This further weakens the already torn perineum muscles.
Incontinence problems
Incontinence refers to the involuntary leaking of the urine. There are different types of incontinence depending on what’s going on with the bladder and the muscles around it.
- Stress Incontinence – Leakage of urine when a little pressure applied on the abdomen, like coughing or sneezing or lifting loads/weights etc.
- Urge incontinence – the sudden feeling that you should visit the restroom to pee. By the time the toilet is reached, a few drops might have dropped already. Though urge incontinence is mixed up with overactive bladder, there is a difference between the two. Visit our article on ‘Urge Incontinence’ to learn more information.
- Overflow incontinence – the case when few drops of urine leak even after you think you are done peeing.
The root cause of any of these incontinence problems is loose muscles around the bladder that are supposed to hold it and squeeze / un-squeeze the bladder when signalled by the brain. When the muscles fail to comply with the signals of the brain (for any reason), the pressure on the bladder may not be like it should be and consequently there will be involuntary leaking of the urine.
How laser vaginal rejuvenation procedure help minimize the symptoms of these problems
During the process of vaginal rejuvenation, apart from removing and reshaping the outer look of the vagina, laser is used on the muscles around the vagina, bladder and rectum. This helps in tightening them along with an increase in production of collagen that helps muscles fix the tears and become strong.
As the vagina become tight (post procedure), you will also feel enhanced sexual pleasure with penetrative sex. As per some of my patients who underwent laser vaginal rejuvenation procedure, “Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation performed by Dr. Deepa Ganesh ma’m is one of the best gifts that I have given to my body. My vagina looks younger and I am more than satisfied with my partner in bed. It also helped in reducing the symptoms of my urinary incontinence problem. Thank you Dr. Deepa” says Dr. Deepa Ganesh.
